Guava Jelly

Cultural Context

Guava jelly has its roots in tropical regions, particularly in India, where guavas are abundant. Traditionally, it has been made during the fruit's peak season and served as a sweet spread or condiment. This jelly not only preserves the fruit's flavor but also evokes memories of family gatherings and homemade treats. Today, guava jelly is enjoyed in various forms across the globe, often used in desserts or as a topping for breads and pastries.

Boil guavas with 6 cups of water on high heat.

3

Once boiling, reduce heat to a simmer and crush the guavas with a potato masher.

Strain the mixture through a strainer bag to extract juice, aiming for 4.5 cups of juice.

6

In a pot, combine 4.5 cups of guava juice with 6 cups of sugar and bring to a hard rolling boil.

7

Add a box of pectin (Sure-Jell) to the boiling mixture and whisk to combine.

Wipe the rims of the jars with distilled white vinegar and place lids and rings on top.

13

Load the jars back into the canner, ensuring they are covered with 1-2 inches of water.

14

Seal the canner and water bath the jars for 5 minutes, starting the timer once a steady stream of steam is observed.
