Guava Jelly

Cultural Context

Guava jelly has its roots in tropical regions, particularly in India, where guavas are abundant. Traditionally, it has been made during the fruit's peak season and served as a sweet spread or condiment. This jelly not only preserves the fruit's flavor but also evokes memories of family gatherings and homemade treats. Today, guava jelly is enjoyed in various forms across the globe, often used in desserts or as a topping for breads and pastries.

1

Wash 1 kg of guava thoroughly.

2

Cut the guava into 8-10 pieces, removing the sides but not the seeds.

3

Place the cut guava into a pot and add enough water to submerge the guava completely.

4

Bring the pot to a boil on high flame and cook for about 10 minutes until the guava is soft enough to mash.

5

Mash the cooked guava using a masher or a ladle, avoiding blenders to keep the seeds intact.

6

Strain the mashed guava through a sieve to separate the juice from the pulp, discarding the pulp.

7

Measure the amount of juice obtained and pour it into a pan.

8

For every cup of juice, add half a cup of sugar (adjust according to taste).

9

Mix the sugar into the juice until it dissolves completely, stirring continuously.

10

After the sugar has dissolved, reduce the heat to medium and continue cooking the mixture.

11

Squeeze the juice of 1 lemon into the mixture to prevent sugar crystals from forming.

12

Cook the mixture until it thickens, checking for consistency by dropping a small amount into cold water to see if it sets.

13

Once the jelly has set, transfer it into glass jars while still warm to prevent it from solidifying in the pot.
