Oliebollen

Cultural Context

Oliebollen, or 'oil balls', are a traditional Dutch treat enjoyed during New Year's celebrations. Originating from the 16th century, these deep-fried pastries symbolize good luck for the coming year. Today, they are a beloved winter snack in the Netherlands, often served at fairs and markets, with variations including fruit or spices.

1

Heat up 500 milliliters of milk in the microwave until lukewarm.

2

Add 2 tablespoons of sugar and 1 pack (7 grams) of yeast to the milk. Stir and set aside.

3

Sift 500 grams of flour into a bowl and add a pinch of salt.

4

Slowly add the yeast mixture to the flour and stir well with a spatula until everything is well combined.

5

Add 1 egg to the mixture and mix again.

6

Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it rest for 1 hour at room temperature.

7

After 1 hour, heat enough oil in a pot on low/medium heat.

8

Dip 2 spoons in the oil to prevent the dough from sticking, scoop some dough, and shape it into a ball.

9

Carefully let the dough balls slide into the hot oil for deep frying.

10

Deep fry the dough balls until golden brown, flipping them occasionally.

11

Halfway through frying, add some chopped apples and cinnamon to the batter for variation.

12

Deep fry the apple and cinnamon dough balls just like the plain ones.

13

Once done, sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve.
