Cultural Context

Flan, a beloved dessert in Brazil, has roots in Spanish and Portuguese cuisine, where it was traditionally made with eggs and milk. Today, flan has many variations across Latin America, with flavors ranging from coconut to chocolate, making it a versatile treat enjoyed worldwide.

Servings4
4 eggs
14 oz sweetened condensed milk
1 and 1/4 cups milk
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup sugar
1

Crack 4 eggs into a blender.

2

Add 14 oz sweetened condensed milk to the blender.

3

Fill the empty sweetened condensed milk jar with milk to measure 1 and 1/4 cups and add it to the blender.

4

Add 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract to the blender.

5

Blend the mixture until smooth, ensuring the sweetened condensed milk is fully incorporated.

6

In a small pot on medium heat, add 1/2 cup sugar to make the caramel sauce.

7

Stir the sugar as it melts, watching for it to turn into a smooth, golden brown caramel sauce.

8

Once the caramel is ready, pour it into a fleta (flan mold) and spread it around the bottom and sides.

9

Pour the blended custard mixture over the caramel in the fleta.

10

Secure the fleta with its lid, making sure it's tightly closed.

11

Place the fleta into a Pyrex baking dish and add water to the dish until it comes up about an inch on the sides of the fleta.

12

Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 1 to 1.5 hours.

13

Remove the fleta from the water bath and let it cool before refrigerating for at least 2 hours or overnight.

14

To serve, run a butter knife around the edges of the flan to loosen it.

15

Invert the flan onto a serving plate.
