Cultural Context

Naan has its roots in the Indian subcontinent, dating back to the Mughal era. Traditionally, it was baked in a tandoor, giving it a unique texture and flavor. Naan is often served with rich curries and is a staple in Indian cuisine, symbolizing hospitality and abundance. Today, it has gained popularity worldwide, with various adaptations like garlic naan and stuffed naan, making it a beloved bread in many cultures.

1

Add 1/3 cup of whole milk and 1/3 cup of Greek yogurt to a bowl, heating in the microwave for 15-20 second intervals until warm (100-110°F).

2

Add 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1 tablespoon of active dry yeast to the bowl, mix, and let the yeast proof for 5-10 minutes until bubbly.

3

Prepare a flax egg by combining 1 tablespoon of ground flax seed with 2.5 tablespoons of water; add this to the yeast mixture along with 3 tablespoons of olive oil, and mix to combine.

4

Add 2 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon of salt to the mixture, stirring until it starts to come together for kneading.

5

Knead the dough by hand for about 8 minutes, adding another 1/4 cup of flour or up to 1/2 cup as needed to avoid stickiness.

6

Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough ball inside, cover with plastic wrap or a towel, and let it rise for 1 hour (or 30-45 minutes for a denser naan).

7

After rising, divide the dough into six even pieces and flatten each piece using a rolling pin into oval or triangle shapes, about 1/4 inch thick.

8

Heat a 12-inch cast iron pan to medium heat, add a thin coating of oil, and once shimmering, add the rolled-out naan piece.

9

Cook the first side for 1-2 minutes until bubbles form on top, then flip and cook the other side for about 1 minute until done.

10

Continue rolling and cooking each naan piece until all are done, serving warm or keeping them on a baking sheet in a warm oven (170°F).

11

Avoid leaving naan in the warm oven for too long to prevent it from becoming too crispy.
