Tofu is a plant-based alternative, while canned fish is often less expensive.
Cut tilapia fillets into small sizes.
Add half a teaspoon of salt, one teaspoon of Kashmiri chili powder, freshly ground black pepper, a heaped teaspoon of finely grated garlic, and juice of half a lemon to the fish.
Mix everything well and let it sit for 15 minutes at room temperature.
In a separate bowl, add half a teaspoon of carom seeds, two serving spoons of gram flour, and half a serving spoon of rice flour.
Add a heaped tablespoon of plain yogurt, half a teaspoon of baking powder, and half a teaspoon of turmeric powder to the dry ingredients.
Mix the dry ingredients with the fish, adding just a splash of water to get a light coating.
Heat oil on medium heat and test with a little batter to check if the oil is hot enough.
Add the fish pieces in a single layer to the hot oil and fry for about 2 to 3 minutes before turning them.
Fry until golden brown, adjusting the heat as necessary.
