1 ¼ cup yellow lentils (channa daal)
1 tbsp butter and/or oil
½ an onion, diced
2 cloves of garlic, minced
1 tomato, diced
1 cerrano pepper or any spicy pepper, sliced in half
½ lemon
1 cube vegetable bouillon
4 cups water
1 bay leaf
½ tsp turmeric
¼ tsp coriander
½ tsp cumin seed
½ tbsp mustard seed
½ tsp garam masala
salt and pepper to taste

In a pot, sauté your onion and garlic in some butter and/or oil for 2 minutes over medium heat.

Add in your bay leaf, turmeric, coriander, cumin seed, mustard seed, and garam masala and cook for another 30 seconds.

Once spices have opened up and it is smelling delicious, add in the lentils, cerrano pepper, bouillon cube, 3 cups of water, salt, pepper, tomato, and the juice of half a lemon.

Let simmer on low for about 30 minutes.

Once lentils have softened, and your daal is as spicy as you want it, remove the cerrano and bay leaf.

Cook for another 30 minutes.

Add another cup of water and blend soup up to your liking using a regular or immersion blender.

Simmer for another 10-15 minutes until dish has thickened up a bit more and enjoy!
