1 cup split yellow moong dal
4 cups water
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 medium tomatoes, pureed
2 green chilies, slit
1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp coriander powder
1/2 tsp garam masala
2 tbsp ghee or oil
Salt to taste
Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Rinse the moong dal under running water until the water runs clear.

In a pot, add the rinsed dal and water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until the dal is soft, about 20-25 minutes.

In a separate pan, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.

Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.

Stir in the ginger-garlic paste and green chilies, cooking for another minute until fragrant.

Add the pureed tomatoes, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until the oil separates from the mixture, about 5-7 minutes.

Once the dal is cooked, add it to the tomato-onion mixture. Stir well to combine.

Adjust the consistency by adding more water if needed, and let it simmer for another 5-10 minutes.

Add garam masala and mix well. Cook for an additional 2 minutes.

Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
