Measure the thread around your neck to determine the size of the lei, leaving extra to tie it off.

Double the thread and tie a knot at the end.

Use a sharpie to mark a small dot on the ribbon every two inches.

Poke the needle through each dot to create loops.

Change the direction of the loops occasionally to ensure they form evenly around the needle.

Alternatively, mark the needle about two inches down to measure the ribbon without marking it on the ribbon itself.

Reapply the sharpie as needed since sewing will rub it off.

Eyeball the length of the ribbon if you prefer not to mark it.
