Traditionally, they are filled with a savory mixture of ground meat and spices, reflecting the country's vibrant culinary heritage influenced by African, French, and Taino cultures. These cups are often enjoyed during gatherings and celebrations, making them a symbol of hospitality. Today, they are embraced in various forms across the Caribbean and beyond, with many adapting the fillings to suit local tastes.

Ground turkey reduces fat content, while beans provide a protein-rich, budget-friendly option.

Nutritional yeast offers a cheesy flavor with fewer calories and is vegan.
Peel the plantains and cut them into pieces.
Add the cut plantains to salted water and let them sit for 1 hour to season.
Heat oil in a pot over medium-high heat.
Use a lemon squeezer to shape the plantains into cups: place a piece of plantain in the center and squeeze tightly.
Fry the shaped plantains in the oil for 5 minutes.
Remove the plantains from the oil and squeeze them again in the lemon squeezer to maintain the cup shape.
Return the squeezed plantains to the oil and fry for an additional 2-3 minutes until golden and crispy.
Remove the plantain cups from the oil and let them dry or pat them with a paper towel to remove excess oil.
Fill the plantain cups with cooked turkey.
Top the turkey with pickles and a dipping sauce made from turkey broth.
