Often prepared for special occasions, it showcases the use of local spices like berbere, which adds depth and warmth. In modern times, variations can be found across the globe, adapting to local tastes while maintaining the essence of Ethiopian flavors.

Chicken is leaner and often more affordable.

Cayenne and paprika can mimic the heat and flavor profile.
Wash, season, and cook the goat meat for about 50 minutes.
Season the goat meat with all dry ingredients except for the onions.
After 15 minutes of cooking, strain the goat meat.
Fry the goat meat in vegetable oil until browned.
Add purple onions to the oil for extra flavor.
Add extra seasoning powder to the oil while frying the meat.
Once the goat meat is browned, remove it from the oil.
Prepare the red bell peppers by removing the seeds and blending them.
Strain the blended bell peppers to remove excess water.
Use the same oil from frying the goat meat to cook the stew.
Strain the oil to remove any goat meat particles.
Add purple onions to the hot oil and mix.
Add curry powder to the oil after mixing the onions.
After 3 minutes, add the blended bell peppers to the pot.
Add blended onions to the pot and mix everything together.
Add blended ginger, garlic, and celery to the mixture and mix well.
Cook the mixture on medium to low heat for about 10 minutes.
Add blended anise seeds and dried thyme to the pot.
Add extra oil if needed for cooking the stew.
After 25 minutes, add the goat meat back into the stew.
After 5 minutes, add two whole yellow peppers, white pepper, and basil leaves.
Add beef bouillon to the stew and press the yellow peppers to release their aroma.
Adjust the oil level if too much oil was added during cooking.
Cook the stew for a total of 35 to 40 minutes until ready.
