Mum’s Traditional Irish Soda Bread Recipe (Brown Bread) for St. Patrick's Day

In a large bowl, mix together whole wheat flour and white flour.

Add baking soda and salt to the flour mixture and mix well.

Rub cold cubed butter into the dry ingredients until it resembles fine bread crumbs.

In a separate jug, combine buttermilk and an egg.

Make a well in the dry ingredients and pour in the wet mixture.

Use your hands to bring the dough together quickly without kneading.

Form the dough into a round shape about an inch and a half thick.

Place the dough on a generously floured baking tray.

Score the top of the dough with a knife to create a cross.

Poke holes in each corner of the bread to release the fairies.

Glaze the bread with leftover buttermilk and egg mixture.

Sprinkle oats on top of the bread.

Bake at 425F/210C for 15 minutes, then lower the temperature and continue baking until done.
