Irish Soda Bread

Cultural Context

Irish Soda Bread originated in Ireland in the 19th century, utilizing baking soda as a leavening agent due to the lack of yeast. Traditionally, it was made with simple ingredients, reflecting the frugality of rural life. Today, it is a staple in Irish households and is enjoyed worldwide, often served with butter or jam.

Servings4
4 cups all-purpose flour
4 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup softened butter
1 cup whole fat cultured buttermilk
1 egg
1

In a bowl, combine 4 cups of all-purpose flour, 4 tablespoons of granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Stir the dry ingredients well.

2

Add 1/2 cup of softened butter to the dry ingredients and mix until it resembles a coarse mixture, similar to making biscuits.

3

Preheat the oven to 375°F.

4

Add 1 cup of whole fat cultured buttermilk and 1 egg to the mixture. Gather all the ingredients together, mixing until it forms a dough.

5

Knead the dough for a couple of minutes until it comes together. Note that this is not a yeast bread, so there is no rising involved.

6

Let the dough rest for about 10 minutes before baking.

7

Shape the dough into a ball and place it on a flat cast iron skillet.

8

Cut a crisscross in the top of the dough before baking.

9

Bake in the preheated oven at 375°F for about 30-45 minutes, checking for doneness with a thermometer if unsure.
