Irish Soda Bread

Cultural Context

Irish Soda Bread originated in Ireland in the 19th century, utilizing baking soda as a leavening agent due to the lack of yeast. Traditionally, it was made with simple ingredients, reflecting the frugality of rural life. Today, it is a staple in Irish households and is enjoyed worldwide, often served with butter or jam.

6 servings
Servings4
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1 large egg
4 tablespoons unsalted butter (cold, cut into small pieces)
1/2 cup dark raisins
1/2 cup golden raisins
1 cup buttermilk
zest of 1 orange
1

Preheat the oven to 375°F.

2

Prepare a 9-inch round pan by placing a piece of non-stick parchment paper at the bottom.

3

In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.

4

Add cold unsalted butter (cut into small pieces) to the dry ingredients and mix until the butter resembles small pieces the size of peas.

5

In a separate bowl, mix together the buttermilk, egg, and optional orange zest.

6

Add the buttermilk mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until combined; the mixture will be sticky.

7

Fold in the dark and golden raisins until evenly distributed.

8

Flour a work surface well and turn the dough out onto it; mix gently to form a round ball, being careful not to overwork the dough.

9

Make an X on the top of the dough with a sharp knife to help it cook evenly.

10

Place the dough into the prepared pan and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the top sounds hollow when tapped.

11

Let the bread cool for a bit before slicing.
