Whole wheat dough adds fiber.
Prepare bread dough according to recipe instructions and let it rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
In a skillet, melt butter over medium heat and sauté onion and garlic until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
Add sausage to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it apart, about 5-7 minutes.
Season the mixture with nutmeg, salt, and pepper, then remove from heat and let cool slightly.
Roll out the risen dough on a floured surface into a rectangle.
Cut the dough into strips, about 4 inches wide.
Place a portion of the sausage mixture along the edge of each strip.
Roll the dough over the sausage, sealing the edges to form a log.
Place the rolls seam-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Brush the tops with beaten egg for a golden finish.
Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
