Rao's Marinara Sauce is a classic Italian tomato sauce known for its rich flavor and simplicity, often used in pasta dishes or as a base for other recipes.
Ingredients
- ●1/4 cup olive oil
- ●1 medium onion, finely chopped
- ●4 cloves garlic, minced
- ●2 cans (28 ounces each) whole peeled tomatoes
- ●1 teaspoon salt
- ●1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- ●1 teaspoon sugar
- ●1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped
- ●1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
- 1Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
- 2Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- 3Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- 4Add the whole peeled tomatoes (with their juice) to the saucepan, breaking them up with a spoon.
- 5Season the mixture with salt, black pepper, and sugar. Stir to combine.
- 6Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let it cook for about 30-45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- 7Add the chopped basil and red pepper flakes (if using) to the sauce, stirring to incorporate.
- 8Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary, then remove from heat.
- 9Let the sauce cool slightly before using or storing.

- 5Pour in the milk and let it simmer until mostly evaporated, about 10 minutes.
- 6Add the white wine and let it simmer until reduced by half, about 10 minutes.
- 7Stir in the crushed tomatoes, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Bring to a simmer.
- 8Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce cook for at least 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
- 9Add the chopped basil and stir to combine. Cook for an additional 10 minutes.
- 10Serve the sauce over your favorite pasta and top with grated Parmesan cheese.
