Originating from Southern Italy, Marinara sauce is a staple of Italian cuisine, traditionally made with simple ingredients like tomatoes, garlic, and herbs. It embodies the Italian philosophy of using fresh, high-quality ingredients to create flavorful dishes. Today, Marinara sauce is enjoyed worldwide, often used in pasta dishes, pizzas, and as a base for various recipes.

Heat olive oil on medium high in a deep sided skillet until it shimmers.
Add onion and garlic to the pan and cook for about 2 minutes until the onion begins to soften and becomes translucent, stirring occasionally.
Add crushed tomatoes and tomato paste to the skillet and stir until well incorporated.
Once bubbling, add brown sugar, salt, pepper, parsley, oregano, and basil, and stir.
Turn the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Optionally, add 1/4 cup of white wine or chicken broth to the sauce and stir.
Leave the sauce uncovered and let it simmer lightly, stirring occasionally, for about 20 to 30 minutes until the flavors meld together and the sauce reaches the desired consistency.
Remove from heat and serve.
