Today, pastéis are enjoyed across Brazil and have inspired countless variations, from sweet to savory, making them a staple at parties and casual gatherings.

Chop the onions into small cubes.
Heat a little oil in a pot.
Fry the onions for 3 minutes until soft.
Add the ground beef and mix it a little.
Season with salt and pepper according to taste.
Cook for around 20 minutes until well cooked.
Turn off the heat and transfer the filling to a bowl to cool down.
In a big bowl, add the flour and salt, mixing a little.
In another bowl, break the eggs and beat them.
Add the beaten eggs to the flour.
Pour in the water and start mixing with a spoon or fork.
Once the liquids are absorbed, start mixing with your hands until the dough is smooth and soft.
Knead the dough on a floured surface and cover it with plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out.
Let the dough rest in the fridge for at least 2 hours.
After resting, roll out the dough into a thin rectangle on a floured countertop.
Cut the dough into desired shapes for the pastéis.
For the filling, add ground beef and cheese to one piece of dough.
For the Romeo and Juliet filling, add a little cassava and cheese to another piece of dough.
Seal the edges of the pastéis with a fork.
Heat around 900 milliliters of vegetable oil in a pot.
Once the oil is hot enough, fry the pastéis until the dough gains a bit of color.
Transfer the fried pastéis to a bowl with paper towels to drain excess oil.
Let the pastéis dry for a couple of minutes before serving.
