Kelewele is a beloved street food from Ghana, made from ripe plantains seasoned with a blend of spices. Traditionally enjoyed as a snack or side dish, it reflects the vibrant flavors of West African cuisine. Today, Kelewele has gained popularity beyond Ghana, often served at parties and gatherings, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of the region.

Peel and slice ripe plantains into bite-sized pieces.
In a blender, combine ginger, garlic, scotch bonnet pepper, salt, cayenne pepper, nutmeg, and a splash of water to form a smooth paste.
In a large bowl, mix the plantain pieces with the spice paste until evenly coated.
Let the mixture marinate for at least 30 minutes to enhance the flavors.
Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium-high heat until shimmering.
Carefully add the marinated plantains to the hot oil in batches, avoiding overcrowding.
Fry the plantains for 3-5 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown and crispy.
Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried plantains and drain on paper towels.
Sprinkle with lime juice and additional salt to taste.
Serve hot as a snack or side dish, garnished with sliced onions.
