Baked French Onion Soup

Traditionally made with simple ingredients like onions, broth, and bread, it showcases the art of transforming humble components into a comforting meal. Today, it is enjoyed worldwide, with variations that include different types of cheese and broth.
Gruyère cheese

Low-fat cheese reduces calories while Swiss provides similar melt.

💰Cheaper: chicken broth
White grape juice adds sweetness without alcohol, chicken broth is more economical.
Cut up the onions into thicker chunks.
Melt 1/2 cup of butter in a pan.
Add chopped onions to the melted butter.
Add 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce and 1 tablespoon of brown sugar to the onions and mix until coated.
Bake the onions in the oven at 325°F for 2 and 1/2 hours, stirring every half hour.
After 2 and 1/2 hours, the onions should be caramelized and cooked down.
Add 32 oz of beef broth and 1 cup of water to the pan with the onions.
Season with salt to taste and heat on the stovetop until hot and bubbly.
Serve the soup in a bowl or mug, adding croutons or crusty bread on top.
Spread cheese over the bread and broil until melted.
