Sorrel Drink

Cultural Context

Originating from West Africa, Sorrel Drink is made from the vibrant hibiscus flower, known locally as 'sorrel' or 'zobo'. Traditionally enjoyed during festive occasions, it embodies the region's rich flavors and communal spirit. Today, it has gained popularity beyond Africa, with variations appearing in Caribbean and Latin American cuisines, celebrated for its refreshing taste and vibrant color.

1

Wash and clean the sorrel leaves.

2

In a large pot, combine 2 cups of sorrel leaves with 5 cups of water, 6 cloves, 1 star anise, and 1 cinnamon stick.

3

Bring the mixture to a boil.

4

Once boiling, let it boil for 15 to 20 minutes.

5

Remove from heat and let it cool completely (the creator left it overnight).

6

Strain the mixture to separate the juice from the solids.

7

Return the juice to a pot and heat on low.

8

Add brown sugar to the juice and stir until dissolved (the heat helps dissolve the sugar quickly).

9

Add the juice of 1 lime (optional) and mix well.
