Semla

Cultural Context

Originating in Sweden, Semla is traditionally enjoyed during Lent, particularly on Shrove Tuesday. This sweet bun, filled with almond paste and whipped cream, symbolizes the end of winter and the arrival of spring. Today, Semla is celebrated beyond its religious roots, with variations found across Scandinavia and even in modern cafes worldwide, where it is often enjoyed year-round.

heavy cream

🥗Healthier: whipped coconut cream

Mix all-purpose flour, yeast, cardamom, room temperature butter, sugar, salt, and warm milk in a bowl for 5-6 minutes until the mixture is easier to work with and sticky.

2

Cover the dough and let it rest for about 1 hour.

Divide the dough into 9 pieces, each weighing 75 grams, and shape them into round balls.

6

Brush the tops of the dough balls with a mixture of egg and milk before baking.

7

Bake in the oven for about 10 minutes until golden brown.

8

Once baked and cooled, hollow out the tops of the buns and fill them with the almond filling.
