This dish is celebrated for its comforting flavors and versatility, with numerous regional variations across South Asia and beyond. Today, dhall is enjoyed globally, adapted to local tastes and ingredients.

Split peas are nutritious and often less expensive.
Show the yellow split peas and explain they are dried.
Boil the split peas in water for about 20 minutes.
After 20 minutes, drain the water and refill with fresh water, continuing to boil until the peas are soft, about 1 hour.
Leave the split peas to boil for an additional 2 hours until they are nice and melted.
Do not add any seasoning while boiling the split peas to avoid slowing the cooking process.
Prepare the spice mixture: heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds, and wait for the mustard seeds to pop.
Once the mustard seeds pop, add chopped onion and brown it.
Add chili powder to the browned onion mixture.
Combine the spice mixture with the boiling split peas, adding salt to taste.
Finish cooking and show the final product, ready to eat with white bread or rice.
