Pea Dhall is a staple dish in Guyana, often served as a comforting side or main dish. It reflects the country's diverse culinary heritage, blending influences from Indian, African, and Indigenous cuisines. Traditionally enjoyed with rice or roti, it showcases the importance of legumes in the local diet. Today, Pea Dhall is celebrated for its simplicity, nutritional value, and versatility, making it a beloved dish in homes and restaurants alike.
split peas
🥗Healthier: red lentils
💰Cheaper: yellow split peas
Red lentils cook faster and provide a similar texture.
vegetable oil

💰Cheaper: canola oil
Coconut oil adds flavor while being a healthier fat.
Measure 1 and 1/2 cups split peas and clean them by washing.
Soak the split peas in water.
Boil 1 liter of water in a pot.
Add the soaked split peas to the boiling water.
Add 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder and 1/2 teaspoon Hing to the boiling split peas.
If in a hurry, add 1/2 tablespoon of oil to the boiling split peas to cook faster.
Cover the pot to help the split peas cook quickly.
After 5 minutes, add 1/2 cup of cold water to the pot (do not add boiling water).
Continue cooking the split peas until they are nearly done.
Add chopped green chilies and spring onions to the pot.
Add 1/2 tablespoon of crushed garlic and 1 small chopped tomato to the pot.
Let the mixture cook for another 10 minutes until everything is well combined.
Heat less than 1/2 cup of oil in a pan for braising.
Add 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds and 1 medium chopped onion to the hot oil.
Fry the mustard seeds and onion until the onion is halfway brown.
Pour the braised mixture into the split peas pot and let it boil for another 5 minutes.
Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
