1 liter water
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon Hing
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/2 cup cold water
1 small tomato
1/2 tablespoon crushed garlic
green chilies
spring onions
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 medium onion
1/2 tablespoon salt
fresh cilantro

Measure 1 and 1/2 cups split peas and clean them by washing.

Soak the split peas in water.

Boil 1 liter of water in a pot.

Add the soaked split peas to the boiling water.

Add 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder and 1/2 teaspoon Hing to the boiling split peas.

If in a hurry, add 1/2 tablespoon of oil to the boiling split peas to cook faster.

Cover the pot to help the split peas cook quickly.

After 5 minutes, add 1/2 cup of cold water to the pot (do not add boiling water).

Continue cooking the split peas until they are nearly done.

Add chopped green chilies and spring onions to the pot.

Add 1/2 tablespoon of crushed garlic and 1 small chopped tomato to the pot.

Let the mixture cook for another 10 minutes until everything is well combined.

Heat less than 1/2 cup of oil in a pan for braising.

Add 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds and 1 medium chopped onion to the hot oil.

Fry the mustard seeds and onion until the onion is halfway brown.

Pour the braised mixture into the split peas pot and let it boil for another 5 minutes.

Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
