Variations exist across the region, with each country adding its unique twist, making it a beloved dish beyond Serbia's borders.

Soak raisins in hot water for about 10 minutes.
Add 1/2 cup of warm water and yeast to prove it.
Separate 4 eggs, adding 1 whole egg and 2 egg yolks to the mixing bowl, discarding the egg whites.
Beat the remaining egg yolk and egg white together for the glaze.
In a 4 cup measuring cup, combine 1 cup boiling water, 1/4 cup shortening, 1/2 cup sugar, 2 teaspoons salt, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 teaspoon lemon extract, and 4 drops yellow food coloring.
Add the egg mixture to the 4 cup measuring cup.
Add enough warm water to make a total of 3 cups and stir.
Combine the contents of the measuring cup with the yeast mixture and raisins in a mixer bowl.
Add 3 cups of flour and mix until just incorporated.
Knead the dough for 20-30 seconds in a mixer until it pulls away from the sides.
Cover the dough and let it rise for 30-45 minutes until doubled in size.
Dump the dough onto a floured surface and divide it in half.
Shape each half into a round loaf and place in a round pie pan.
Cover and let rise until doubled in size.
Preheat the oven to 375°F.
Glaze the tops of the loaves with the egg mixture.
Score the bread with a sharp knife.
Bake at 375°F for 20 minutes, then reduce to 350°F and bake for another 20 minutes.
Let the bread cool slightly before serving.
