Belokranjska Pogača

Its simple ingredients reflect the agricultural heritage of the area, where bread-making is an essential skill. Today, it is enjoyed at family gatherings and celebrations, showcasing the warmth of Slovenian hospitality.

Add 1.5 tablespoons of yeast and 2 teaspoons of sugar to 1/2 cup of warm water and mix. Wait for 10 minutes until it rises.
Sift 3 cups of flour into a bowl and add 1 teaspoon of salt.
Add the risen yeast mixture and another 1/2 cup of warm water to the flour and mix.
Knead the dough for 8 minutes until smooth, adjusting with more flour or water as needed.
Cover the dough and let it rise for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
Grease a round baking tray or the back of a cookie sheet with oil.
Divide the dough in half and stretch each half to about 1 cm thick.
Cut the dough into portions without cutting all the way through, using a knife as a guideline.
Brush the top with beaten egg and sprinkle with salt and cumin seeds.
Preheat the oven to 400°F and bake for 18 to 20 minutes.
Cool on a wire rack before serving.
