Tofu Sisig

Cultural Context

Tofu Sisig is a vegetarian twist on the traditional Filipino dish Sisig, which is typically made with pork. This version uses tofu as a meat substitute, making it suitable for vegetarians while still capturing the essence of the original dish.

4 servings
Servings4
1 block (14 oz) firm tofu
1 medium onion, chopped
2-3 green chilies, chopped
1/4 cup soy sauce
1 tbsp vinegar
1 tbsp calamansi juice (or lime juice)
1/2 tsp ground black pepper
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup mayonnaise (vegan if desired)
1 tbsp cooking oil
1/4 cup chopped green onions (for garnish)
1

Press the tofu to remove excess moisture, then cut it into small cubes.

2

Heat the cooking oil in a pan over medium heat.

3

Add the tofu cubes and fry until golden brown on all sides. Remove from the pan and set aside.

4

In the same pan, add the chopped onion and green chilies. Sauté until the onions are translucent.

5

Return the fried tofu to the pan and add soy sauce, vinegar, calamansi juice, black pepper, and salt. Stir well to combine.

6

Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.

7

Remove from heat and stir in the mayonnaise until well combined.

8

Transfer to a serving dish and garnish with chopped green onions.

9

Serve hot with rice or as a side dish.
