Soup Joumou is a traditional Haitian dish, symbolizing freedom and independence. It is often enjoyed on New Year's Day, commemorating the Haitian Revolution's victory over colonial rule. Today, it remains a cherished comfort food, celebrated for its rich flavors and cultural significance.

HTHTmain
6 servings
Servings4
1 lb beef
2 tablespoons tomato paste
8 cups water
2 cups soft veggies (e.g., pumpkin, carrots)
2 cups hard veggies (e.g., celery, onion)
1 cup coconut milk
2 cups macaroni
4 cloves
1 red bell pepper
1 tablespoon thyme
1/4 cup parsley
2 Maggie cubes
2 tablespoons Haitian vinegar
2 tablespoons butter
1 harban pepper
1 tablespoon salt

Quantities are estimated based on standard recipes for your convenience. The actual ingredients used in this video are accurate.

1

Season the beef and boil it until it turns brown, adding little water at a time.

2

Add tomato paste to the beef to create a sauce or gravy.

3

In a large pot, add about 10 to 12 cups of water and the soft veggies, then let it boil for about 20 minutes.

4

After 20 minutes, add the hard veggies to the pot.

5

Optionally, add coconut milk to the pot.

6

Once the pumpkin is soft, remove it from the pot and mash it using the back of a spoon.

7

Strain the mashed pumpkin back into the pot using hot water, ensuring to scrape the back of the strainer for any leftover pumpkin.

8

Break the macaroni into pieces and add it to the pot.

9

Add the sauce (gravy) made earlier into the pot, scraping the container to get all of it out.

10

Add cloves, red bell pepper, thyme, parsley, and two Maggie cubes to the pot.

11

Add Haitian vinegar and butter to the pot.

12

Let the mixture boil for about 20 to 25 minutes, adding harban pepper for spice if desired.

13

After about 30 minutes, check if everything is cooked, then add salt to taste.
