1 cup softened butter
4 cloves garlic, chopped
1/4 cup chopped basil
1/4 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

Soften 1 cup of butter by placing it in the oven for 1 minute or in the microwave for 15 seconds.

Chop 4 cloves of garlic and 1/4 cup of basil.

In a bowl, mix the softened butter, chopped garlic, chopped basil, a pinch of black pepper, and salt (if using unsalted butter).

Cut the loaf of bread in half lengthwise, making sure not to cut all the way through.

Spread the garlic butter mixture generously inside the cut halves of the bread.

Wrap the bread in aluminum foil, shiny side in or out (it doesn't matter).

Place the wrapped bread in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.

After 15 minutes, remove the bread from the oven and place it on a cookie sheet.

Brush additional butter on top of the bread and sprinkle with 1/4 cup of grated Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Return the bread to the oven for an additional 5 minutes.

After 5 minutes, remove the bread from the oven and brush with more butter for a shiny finish.

Slice the bread almost all the way through for easy serving.
