Soft Pretzels

Cultural Context

Soft pretzels are a popular snack in the United States, especially at fairs, sporting events, and street vendors. They have roots in German baking traditions, where pretzels were originally made as a symbol of good luck. The American version has evolved to include various toppings and flavors, making it a beloved treat across the country.

1

Add 1.5 cups of warm water to a mixing bowl.

2

Add 1 tablespoon of active dry yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar to the water; mix well.

3

Cover the bowl with a towel and let it sit for about 10 minutes until foamy.

4

Add 3 tablespoons of olive oil to the yeast mixture.

5

Add 4 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 tablespoon of salt to the bowl; mix well.

6

If using a stand mixer, knead the dough for 5-6 minutes until smooth and elastic; if mixing by hand, knead until the dough is sticky but not sticking to your hands, adding more flour as needed.

7

Spray a bowl with cooking spray, place the dough ball in the bowl, and cover it; let it rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.

8

Preheat the oven to 450°F.

9

Dump the dough onto a silicone mat and cut it into 8 equal pieces.

10

Roll each piece into a long rope about 24 inches long.

11

Shape each rope into a U, twist the ends, and fold them down to form a pretzel shape.

12

Prepare a pot of hot water and add 2/3 cup of baking soda; bring to a boil.

13

Drop pretzels into the boiling water one or two at a time, flipping them halfway after 15 seconds; boil for a total of 30 seconds.

14

Brush the boiled pretzels with an egg wash and sprinkle with coarse salt or cinnamon sugar as desired.

15

Bake the pretzels for 10-15 minutes until golden brown.
