Soft Pretzels

Cultural Context

Soft pretzels are a popular snack in the United States, especially at fairs, sporting events, and street vendors. They have roots in German baking traditions, where pretzels were originally made as a symbol of good luck. The American version has evolved to include various toppings and flavors, making it a beloved treat across the country.

1

In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water (between 110-115°F) with sugar and salt.

2

Sprinkle one package of dried yeast on top of the water and let it sit for 5 minutes until it foams.

3

Turn the mixer on low and mix the yeast mixture, then gradually add 4.5 to 5 cups of all-purpose flour, one cup at a time, until incorporated.

4

Add melted butter to the mixture and continue to add flour until the dough comes together.

5

Increase the mixer speed to medium and knead the dough for 5 to 7 minutes until smooth. Alternatively, knead by hand for 10 to 15 minutes.

6

Oil a bowl with vegetable oil and place the dough inside, oiling the top to prevent a dry skin.

7

Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour until doubled in size.

8

Prepare two baking sheets by lining them with parchment paper and spraying with non-stick spray or brushing with vegetable oil.

9

In a large roasting pan, bring 8 cups of water to a boil and add baking soda to it.

10

Preheat the oven to 450°F.

11

Sprinkle flour on the counter and cut the risen dough into 12 equal pieces.

12

Shape each piece of dough into a pretzel shape, working quickly to maintain the dough's lightness.
