1

Soak 1/2 cup toor dal for about 1 hour.

2

In a pressure cooker, add the soaked dal and 2 cups of water.

3

Add 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder, a pinch of asafoetida, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and about 1 tablespoon of peanuts.

4

Mix well and pressure cook on medium flame for about 4 to 5 whistles.

5

Once cooked, remove the dal and set aside.

6

In a pot, heat 1 tablespoon of oil and 1 teaspoon of ghee.

7

Add 1 teaspoon mustard seeds and 1 teaspoon cumin seeds and let them crackle.

8

Add 2 slit green chilies and 2 red chilies, along with a pinch of asafoetida and a few curry leaves.

9

Add 2 medium-sized chopped tomatoes and mix well.

10

Add 1 teaspoon turmeric powder, 1 teaspoon red chili powder, and 1 teaspoon coriander powder and mix everything well.

11

Cook the tomatoes until they are mushy, then add 1/2 teaspoon salt.

12

Pour in the cooked dal and mix well, then cover and cook for about 5 minutes on medium flame.

13

To balance flavors, add a piece of jaggery (optional) and mix well.

14

For the dough, in a bowl, add 1 cup of whole wheat flour, 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder, 1/4 teaspoon chili powder, 1/4 teaspoon cumin powder, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 2 tablespoons of oil.

15

Mix the dry ingredients and gradually add water to knead the dough, then let it rest for about 10 minutes.

16

After resting, divide the dough into equal-sized balls and roll them out to a medium thickness.

17

Cut the rolled dough into diamond shapes using a pizza cutter or knife.

18

If the dal thickens, dilute it with a little water before adding the dough pieces.

19

Once the dal is boiling, gently drop in the dough pieces in batches to avoid sticking.

20

Cover and cook for about 10 to 15 minutes on medium flame until the dough pieces are plump and cooked.

21

Finish by adding finely chopped coriander leaves and a squeeze of lemon juice before serving.
