Instructions

  1. 1Rinse the toor dal and soak it for 30 minutes.
  2. 2Cook the soaked dal in water until soft.
  3. 3In a separate bowl, mix whole wheat flour with water to form a dough.
  4. 4Roll out the dough into thin discs and cut into strips.
  5. 5Add the cooked dal to a pot with spices and bring to a simmer.
  6. 6Add the dough strips to the dal and cook until they are tender.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup split red lentils (daal)
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 4 cups water (for rice)
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2-3 cloves
  • 1-2 cardamom pods

Instructions

  1. 1Rinse the split red lentils under cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. 2In a pot, combine the lentils, 4 cups of water, turmeric powder, and salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 20-25 minutes until the lentils are soft.
  3. 3In a separate pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
  4. 4Add the chopped onion and green chilies to the pan. Sauté until the onions are golden brown.
  5. 5Once the lentils are cooked, add the sautéed onion mixture to the lentils and stir well. Adjust salt if necessary and let it simmer for another 5 minutes.
  6. 6In another pot, rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
  7. 7Add 4 cups of water, bay leaf, cloves, and cardamom pods to the rice pot. Bring to a boil.
  8. 8Once boiling, add the rinsed rice and a pinch of salt. Stir gently, then cover and reduce heat to low.
  9. 9Cook for about 15-20 minutes until the rice is fluffy and all the water is absorbed. Remove from heat and let it sit covered for 5 minutes.
  10. 10Fluff the rice with a fork and serve it alongside the daal.
