Ema Datshi
Cultural Context
Ema Datshi is a beloved dish from Bhutan, often referred to as the national dish. It embodies the Bhutanese love for spicy food, combining the heat of green chilies with the creaminess of local cheese. Traditionally served with rice, it reflects the simplicity and heartiness of Bhutanese cuisine. Today, Ema Datshi has gained popularity beyond its borders, with variations appearing in Bhutanese restaurants worldwide.
Heat a karai and add a little bit of oil.
Once heated, add some onions and cook until light brown.
Add chopped tomatoes and stir, cooking for some time.
Add chopped chilies and cook again.
Add potatoes without any masalas, just oil and vegetables.
After 2-3 minutes, add freshly chopped mushrooms.
Add salt to taste and cover with a lid, cooking for 5-10 minutes.
After 5-10 minutes, add warm water to the vegetables.
Add cheese and let it cook for another 5-10 minutes.
