Soft Pretzels

Cultural Context

Soft pretzels are a popular snack in the United States, especially at fairs, sporting events, and street vendors. They have roots in German baking traditions, where pretzels were originally made as a symbol of good luck. The American version has evolved to include various toppings and flavors, making it a beloved treat across the country.

1

Add 1 packet of yeast to 1.25 cups of lukewarm water (85-100 degrees) in a mixing bowl.

2

Let the yeast activate for 5-10 minutes until bubbles form.

3

Add the dough mix to the activated yeast and mix on low speed with a dough hook for 4.5-5 minutes.

4

Increase the speed to medium-low (2 or 3 setting) to knead the dough until well mixed.

5

Form the dough into a ball and place it in a lightly greased glass bowl.

6

Cover the bowl with greased plastic wrap and let it rise for about 1 hour until doubled or tripled in size.

7

Lightly grease the work surface and pour out the risen dough.

8

In a separate pot, bring 8 cups of water to a boil and add the pack of baking soda, stirring to dissolve.

9

Cut the dough into 8 equal parts and roll each part into a long rod to form pretzels.

10

Twist the ends of the rod to shape the pretzel and pinch the ends to secure the shape.

11

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.

12

Gently drop the pretzels into the baking soda water bath for 30 seconds, flipping halfway through.

13

Remove the pretzels from the bath, let them drip dry, and place them on a lightly greased baking tray.

14

Sprinkle pretzel salt over the top of each pretzel.

15

Bake in the preheated oven for about 12 minutes, rotating halfway through, until golden brown.

16

For cinnamon sugar pretzels, brush melted butter on top before sprinkling with cinnamon sugar after baking.

17

Let the pretzels cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
