Haitian Beef Patties

Haitian Beef Patties, or Pâté Haitian, are a beloved street food in Haiti, often enjoyed as a snack or at celebrations. These savory pastries are filled with spiced ground beef, reflecting the island's rich culinary heritage influenced by African, French, and Caribbean flavors. Today, they are enjoyed by many around the world, often served at parties or family gatherings, symbolizing hospitality and community.

Ground turkey is leaner, while ground pork is often less expensive.

Coconut oil adds a unique flavor, while margarine is typically cheaper.
Place a frying pan over medium heat and add ground beef.
Break up the meat with a spoon while it cooks to keep it minced.
Add diced onions, minced garlic, and diced green bell peppers to the ground beef.
Optionally, add diced scotch bonnet pepper for spice.
Season the ground beef with salt, black pepper, ground cumin, paprika powder, and all-purpose seasoning.
Add one to two tablespoons of green seasoning mix to the beef and mix well.
Cook the ground beef for about 10 minutes until browned and fully cooked, breaking it up continuously with a fork.
Set the cooked ground beef aside to cool.
Sprinkle flour on a counter surface and prepare a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray.
Thaw the store-bought puff pastry sheets according to package directions.
Cut the puff pastry into three strips or squares, depending on desired patty size.
Place two to three spoonfuls of the ground beef mixture on one side of the pastry.
Wet the edges of the dough with water to help seal it.
Fold the dough over the filling and press the edges to seal.
Use a floured fork to press down on the edges for a better seal and design.
Dust off excess flour from the pastry before placing it on the greased baking sheet.
Repeat the process to form all patties; expect to make about nine large patties or more smaller ones.
Beat one to two eggs with a little water to create an egg wash.
Brush the egg wash on top of each patty for a golden brown finish.
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (204 degrees Celsius).
Bake the patties in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes until puffy and golden brown.
