Separate the 4 eggs into whites and yolks, using the yolks for the custard sauce.

Add 1/2 cup of sugar and 2 teaspoons of vanilla to the egg yolks and whisk until pale.

Whisk in 1 cup of cream and 1 cup of milk to the egg yolk mixture.

Place a pot on the stove and connect a thermometer to it.

Turn the heat to medium low and slowly cook the custard until it coats the back of a spoon or reaches between 175 and 180°F on a thermometer.

Once thickened, prepare a large bowl with ice water and set another bowl inside it.

Place a strainer over the bowl and strain the custard sauce into it, whisking for a few minutes to cool it down.
