Marinate pork ribs with soy sauce, rice wine, garlic, ginger, and black pepper for at least 1 hour.
Heat vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat until shimmering.
Add chopped onions and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
Add marinated pork ribs to the pot and sear on all sides until browned, about 8-10 minutes.
Sprinkle in sugar, coriander, and cumin; stir to combine.
Pour in enough water to cover the ribs, bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low.
Cover and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, until ribs are tender.
Remove the lid and increase heat to medium-high to reduce the sauce, about 10 minutes.
Grill the ribs on a barbecue for 5-7 minutes for a smoky flavor, if desired.
Garnish with chopped scallions and sesame seeds before serving.
Serve hot with steamed rice.
