Traditionally filled with spiced meat and vegetables, these pies are often enjoyed as snacks or quick meals. They embody the spirit of communal eating and are popular at gatherings and celebrations. Today, variations can be found across Southern Africa, with each region adding its unique twist to the filling and pastry.

Add 2 cups of flour and 1/2 tablespoon of salt to a bowl.
Mix in 3 tablespoons of margarine and combine the ingredients.
Add very icy cold water to the mixture to form the dough.
Knead the dough on a surface and add more butter as needed.
Refrigerate the dough after mixing.
Chop beef into small pieces instead of using ground beef.
Add thyme, water, and salt to the beef and let it boil.
Cook the beef until well done, then fry it a little for color.
Add chopped onion to the beef and cook until translucent.
Add diced potatoes to the beef first, as they take longer to cook.
After potatoes, add mixed vegetables (peas, carrots) to the beef.
Add curry powder to the mixture for flavor.
Add a little water to create a sauce, then thicken it with flour.
Cut a piece of dough and prepare it for filling with the meat mixture.
