These Greek Lamb Burgers Taste Like a Gyro in a Bun! 🇬🇷🍔

Mediterranean Lamb Burgers with Avocado Tzatziki

Originating from the Mediterranean region, lamb burgers are a flavorful twist on traditional beef burgers, often infused with aromatic spices and herbs. In Greece, the addition of tzatziki—a yogurt-based sauce—adds a refreshing element that complements the richness of lamb. This dish has gained popularity worldwide, with various adaptations featuring local ingredients and flavors.

Mashed peas provide a similar creamy texture.
In a mixing bowl, add 2 lbs of ground lamb.
Season with 1 and 1/2 to 2 tsp of salt and 1 tsp of freshly cracked black pepper.
Add 2 tsp of ground cumin powder and 1 and 1/2 to 2 tsp of ground coriander.
Add 1/2 to 1 tsp of dried mint and 1/2 to 1 tsp of finely chopped fresh rosemary (or 1 tsp of dried oregano).
Grate a whole bell pepper and add it to the mixture, discarding the skin.
Crumble in lots of feta cheese and mix the ingredients well.
Form the mixture into six patties and place them on a parchment-lined baking tray, flattening them out, especially in the center.
Slice an onion for caramelizing.
In a frying pan, add olive oil, a pinch of salt, and a pinch of granulated sugar, and add the sliced onion.
Cook the onions over medium heat for about 15 minutes until they start to become golden.
Turn off the heat and prepare a cast iron pan or barbecue grill, heating it to about 500°F.
Cook the patties for about four minutes on each side, flipping once and cooking for an additional one to two minutes until the internal temperature reaches 160°F.
Top the burgers with crumbled feta for the last minute of cooking.
Toast the buns in the same pan for a few seconds until they're warm.
Assemble the burger on the toasted bun, adding caramelized onions, a drizzle of balsamic glaze, and a dollop of zadziki.
