Puerto Rican Style Chili

Puerto Rican Style Chili, or Chili Boricua, reflects the island's vibrant culinary traditions, combining influences from indigenous Taíno, Spanish, and African cuisines. This hearty dish is often enjoyed during family gatherings and celebrations, showcasing the island's love for bold flavors and communal dining. Today, variations abound, with many adding unique local ingredients like plantains or sweet potatoes, making it a beloved comfort food across the Caribbean and beyond.
ground beef

kidney beans

Heat olive oil in a pot over high heat until shimmering.
Sauté 1 chopped white onion and 1/2 yellow bell pepper until soft.
Remove most of the sautéed veggies, add more oil, and add 1 lb of turkey, breaking it apart until browned.
Stir in 3 tablespoons of Sofrito and mix well.
Add 4 minced garlic cloves and mix in.
Add 1 tablespoon of white sugar to balance acidity.
Add back the sautéed veggies.
Add 2 cans of diced tomatoes and 1 small can of tomato paste.
Add 1 can of kidney beans and 1 can of pinto beans.
Add 1 bay leaf, 1 packet of chicken bouillon, Creole seasoning, 1 tablespoon of chili powder, and 1 teaspoon of oregano.
Add enough water until the mixture is thick but not too soupy.
Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 30 minutes.
