Vanilla Cake

Cultural Context

Vanilla cake is a classic dessert in American cuisine, often served at celebrations such as birthdays and weddings. Its simple yet rich flavor makes it a versatile choice for various occasions. The cake's origins can be traced back to the 19th century when baking powder was introduced, allowing for lighter and fluffier cakes. Today, it remains a beloved staple in bakeries and home kitchens alike.

1

Grease two 9-inch round cake pans and place a piece of round parchment paper on the bottom.

2

In a large bowl, add 3/4 cup softened butter and 1 and 3/4 cups white granulated sugar. Mix together for about 2 to 3 minutes.

3

Add 2 large room temperature eggs and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract to the mixture. Mix well, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed.

4

In another bowl, combine 2 and 1/2 cups flour, 2 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Whisk together.

5

To the main bowl of batter, add half of the 1 and 1/4 cups of milk and mix in.

6

Add a little of the flour mixture, then the rest of the milk, followed by the remaining flour mixture. Mix until just combined, being careful not to over mix.

7

Preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C).

8

Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.

9

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

10

Allow the cakes to cool in their pans for 10 to 15 minutes, then remove from the pans and place on a wire rack to cool completely.

11

Once cooled, place the cakes in the fridge for about 30 minutes before frosting.

12

Frost the first layer of the cake with a small amount of frosting to help it stick, then place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides as desired.

13

Decorate with chocolate sprinkles if desired.
