Prepare the cream by mixing all ingredients in a saucepan and cooking while stirring for 2-3 minutes until thick.
Add vanilla and butter to the cream mixture and mix well.
Transfer the cream to a plate and place it in the freezer to cool, covering it to prevent a skin from forming.
In a separate bowl, beat room temperature butter until fluffy.
Add sugar to the butter and beat for 2-3 minutes until creamy.
Add egg yolks one by one, mixing well after each addition.
Pour in the milk and mix until combined and the mixture has doubled in size.
Add 1.5 cups of flour (slightly more than 1.5 cups) and 1/2 packet of baking powder, mixing until the batter is creamy.
Prepare the meringue by beating egg whites with a pinch of salt until foamy.
Gradually add 1 cup of sugar, one tablespoon at a time, while continuing to beat until stiff peaks form.
Add a tablespoon of starch to the meringue and mix briefly.
Spread the cake batter evenly in a lined baking tray.
Quickly spread the meringue over the batter, shaping it as desired and adding nuts on top.
Bake in a preheated oven at 170°C (fan) for 35 minutes.
Remove the cream from the freezer after it has cooled and whip it for 2-3 minutes until thick.
Whip the pudding mixture until it becomes thick and creamy.
Combine half of the whipped cream with the pudding to lighten it, then fold in the remaining whipped cream.
Once the cake has cooled, cut it in half horizontally and spread cream on the bottom layer before placing the top layer back on.
Drizzle melted chocolate or sauce over the top if desired and let it rest in the fridge for 2 hours before serving.
