Originating in Sweden, Semla is traditionally enjoyed on Shrove Tuesday, marking the start of Lent. This sweet, cardamom-spiced bun filled with almond paste and cream has become a beloved treat throughout the country, often consumed in the weeks leading up to Easter. Today, variations exist, and Semla can be found in bakeries worldwide, delighting those who seek a taste of Swedish culture.

Heat milk in a saucepan until warm, then stir in yeast until dissolved.
Combine flour, sugar, salt, and cardamom in a mixing bowl.
Add melted butter and eggs to the flour mixture, then pour in the yeast mixture.
Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface until smooth, about 5-10 minutes.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
Divide the dough into equal pieces and shape into balls.
Place the dough balls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let rise for another 30 minutes.
Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 10-15 minutes.
Allow the buns to cool completely on a wire rack.
Cut the tops off the buns and hollow out a small portion of the insides.
Fill each bun with almond paste and whipped cream mixture.
Replace the tops and dust with powdered sugar before serving.
