Kasar Mava Modak
Cultural Context
Originating from the Indian festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, Kasar Mava Modak is a traditional sweet offered to Lord Ganesha. These delightful dumplings made with mawa and flavored with saffron symbolize prosperity and are often made during celebrations. Today, variations can be found across India, reflecting local ingredients and tastes, making them a beloved treat year-round.

Heat a kadhai on the gas stove.
Add 2 tablespoons of butter to the heated kadhai.
Pour in 1 cup of fresh cream and mix well until melted.
Add 1 cup of milk and stir until it comes to a boil.
Add 2 cups of milk powder and mix well.
Optionally, add saffron mixed in warm milk and stir.
Let the mixture thicken until it resembles a batter.
Remove from heat and let it cool for about 10 minutes, optionally refrigerate to set.
In another kadhai, add 1 tablespoon of ghee and heat it.
Add cashews, almonds, and pistachios and roast for 1-2 minutes.
Add raisins and chironji (optional) and mix well.
Transfer the mixture to a mixer jar and grind coarsely.
Add 1 tablespoon of condensed milk and mix well.
Grease hands with ghee and take a portion of the mixture to form a dough.
Shape the dough into modaks by hand, optionally using a mold.
Garnish with the roasted nut mixture inside the modak.
Shape and design the modaks as desired.
