French Dip Sliders

Cultural Context

Originating in the early 20th century in Los Angeles, French Dip Sliders are a delightful twist on the classic French Dip sandwich. Traditionally made with thinly sliced roast beef served on a crusty roll, they are often accompanied by a rich broth for dipping. These sliders have become a popular party food, allowing guests to enjoy the same savory flavors in a smaller, shareable format. Today, variations abound, with different cheeses and toppings enhancing this beloved dish.

Servings4
1 package (12 pack) of Hawaiian rolls
12 slices roast beef
6-10 slices mild provolone
¼ c. melted butter
2 tsp. dried minced onion
¼ tsp. garlic powder
2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp. poppy seeds
1 c. beef broth
½ tsp. Worcestershire sauce
salt and pepper to taste
pinch of garlic powder

provolone cheese

🥗Healthier: part-skim mozzarella

💰Cheaper: cheddar cheese

Part-skim mozzarella reduces fat while maintaining meltiness.

beef broth

🥗Healthier: homemade broth

💰Cheaper: vegetable broth

Vegetable broth is often less expensive and still flavorful.

roast beef

🥗Healthier: lean turkey

💰Cheaper: shredded chicken

Shredded chicken is a more affordable protein option.

slider rolls

🥗Healthier: whole grain rolls

💰Cheaper: white bread

Whole grain rolls add fiber, while white bread is typically cheaper.

1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2

Prepare a 9 x 13in. glass baking dish by greasing with cooking spray.

3

Slice the Hawaiian rolls in half (but don’t separate the individual rolls).

4

Place the bottoms of the rolls into the baking dish.

5

Top with the roast beef and cheese, distributing evenly across the rolls.

6

Place the tops of the rolls onto the sandwiches.

7

Whisk together the melted butter with the minced onion, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, and poppy seeds.

8

Pour this mixture over the sandwiches, spreading the onions and poppy seeds out to cover them evenly.

9

Cover the sandwiches in foil and bake for about 10 minutes at 350 degrees.

10

Remove foil and bake for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, the meat is warm, and the rolls are a little crispy on top.

11

While the sandwiches bake, make the “au jus” by combining the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce in a small saucepan over low heat and seasoning to taste with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

12

Serve the sandwiches with a side of sauce for dipping.
