Cabbage rolls, or Sarmale, are a beloved dish in Romania, often prepared for festive occasions and family gatherings. This dish reflects the agricultural traditions of the region, utilizing preserved cabbage and hearty fillings to sustain families through the winter months. Today, Sarmale can be found in various forms across Eastern Europe, each region adding its unique twist to the recipe.

Fresh tomatoes add brightness and flavor.
Fry 1 kg of chopped onion in 200 ml of sunflower oil for 4-5 minutes, adding salt.
Add 300 g of sliced smoked kaiser and 100 ml of tomato juice to the onion.
Stir in 300 g of round grain rice and 300 ml of water, cooking over low heat until the water evaporates.
Remove the rice from heat and let it cool down.
Once cooled, mix in 1 kg of ground meat (pork and beef), ground black pepper, 1 teaspoon of thyme, 1 teaspoon of dried marjoram, and 2 tablespoons of corn flour.
Take a cabbage leaf and place a tablespoon of the meat mixture on it, rolling it up and tucking in the ends.
Chop the remaining cabbage leaves and distribute them on the bottom of the pot.
Add a few sprigs of dried marjoram and a few peppercorns to the pot.
Place the cabbage rolls in the pot and layer them with slices of smoked kaiser.
Complete the layering with the remaining cabbage rolls and add more sprigs of dried marjoram among them.
Cover the cabbage rolls with chopped cabbage leaves.
