Ingredients

  • 500 grams amla (Indian gooseberry)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup desiccated coconut (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1Wash the amla thoroughly and remove the seeds.
  2. 2In a pot, combine sugar and water, and bring to a boil to make a sugar syrup.
  3. 3Once the syrup reaches a one-string consistency, add the amla to the pot.
  4. 4Cook the amla in the syrup for about 10-15 minutes until they become translucent and well-coated with syrup.
  5. 5Add cardamom powder and salt, and mix well.
  6. 6Remove the amla from the syrup and place them on a greased tray or parchment paper to cool.
  7. 7If using, sprinkle desiccated coconut over the amla while they are still sticky.
  8. 8Let the amla candy cool completely and harden for a few hours.
  9. 9Once set, cut into pieces or leave whole as desired.
  10. 10Store in an airtight container.
