Soak salt beef overnight to reduce saltiness.
Cut carrots into pieces.
Peel and cut turnip in half and slice into pieces.
Cut the root off the cabbage and slice it into quarters.
Layer the soaked salt beef in the center of a cold Dutch oven.
Add carrots, then turnip, and cut potatoes in half before adding them to the pot.
Layer cabbage on top of the vegetables.
Add about 1 cup of water to cover the bottom of the vegetables.
Prepare peas pudding by draining soaked split peas and placing them in a cloth bag.
Tie the bag and place it on top of the vegetables in the Dutch oven without submerging it in water.
Add any remaining cabbage on top of the peas pudding.
Cover the Dutch oven with a lid and prepare to cook using coals.
Place 14 coals on top and 10 coals on the bottom of the Dutch oven for cooking.
Cook for about 1.5 to 2 hours, turning the pot every 50 minutes.
After cooking, remove the lid and check the dinner.
