Our Cultures, Our Stories: Baklava (Syrian Recipe)

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Grease a baking dish with melted butter.

Layer sheets of phyllo dough in the dish, brushing each layer with melted butter.

Chop walnuts and pistachios finely and mix with sugar, cinnamon, and salt.

Spread a layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo dough.

Continue layering phyllo and nut mixture until all ingredients are used, finishing with phyllo on top.

Cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes using a sharp knife.

Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes until golden brown.

While baklava is baking, combine water, sugar, honey, lemon juice, and vanilla in a saucepan.

Bring the syrup mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.

Remove baklava from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over it.

Allow baklava to cool completely before serving.

Garnish with additional chopped nuts if desired.
